October 30, 2019 – the monthly TRG talk about talent Management took place upstairs in one of the TRG meeting rooms. The topic for this month was: “Change your environment or change yourself”. This month’s seminar was led by Rick Yvanovich who has 40-year experience in supermarkets, the accounting profession, breweries, newsagents, defence manufacturing, IT, property development and BP (British Petroleum) and working in different countries.

This month’s speaker was Rick Yvanovich, Founder and CEO of TRG International. He began by highlighting the importance of discussing topics regarding Talent. No matter which business you are in, you’ll always have to deal with people. Today’s topic was suggested by a previous attendee, and with such an interesting topic, we thought – why not?

Jumping directly into the topic, Mr Yvanovich opened the talk with a discussion to get everybody’s thought on the topic. How does environment impact us? How do we adapt to our environment? How do we change our environment? Why should we change our environment? Or should we change?

In a workplace, the people in the organisation is the environment, and the relationships and attitudes in that environment can have either a positive or negative effect. It’s about how people get along with each other, how we communicate, if we can trust each other, the company goals and values, and this is why this discussion is so important.

Are we compatible with our environment? Can we exist with the other people in the company without conflict? The more compatible we are, the happier we can be.

There exist six different interests that people seem to have; doers, thinkers, creators, helpers, persuaders and organisers. We all have these qualities but more or less of some things, and depending on your interests, you’re more compatible with some than others. If the interests are complete opposites, it’s difficult to get along whereas if they are only a little bit different you will be more compatible, which leads to the next interesting question Mr Yvanovich asked;

Is it better to work in an environment with people who are just like you?

It is said that you’re as successful as the five people you spend the majority of your time with, so it is important to choose carefully who that is. It should be people that lift you up, people you can learn from. Here, Mr Yvanovich stresses the importance of having a diverse workforce. If there is good diversity, people will feel less isolated as there will always be someone that they will be compatible with. Not everybody is the same, therefore it will be easier to adjust in a diverse workforce rather than having only one unique person in a group of one type of person. How we feel in the environment is important, the better we align with people around us the easier it is to adjust and wanting to fit in than in a company where you don’t align with anybody. A diverse workforce as everybody will be able to contribute to something unique. It’s more important that there is a common goal to work towards – a common purpose. It’s a matter of direction, everybody will feel a little bit out of place but at least there is a general direction.                                         

It’s all about the state of mind

Mr Yvanovich highlight that most of this talk has been about employees adapting to their environment but what about the organisation adapting? The organisation you are in might have good values and a good culture, but it might not fit with the employees and what they do, so a challenge is trying to change. Develop a learning organisation that inspires effort to learn and new skills. Skills can be developed but we need to teach people to adopt the growth mindset,

It’s how we think and whether we believe if we can change. It’s all about fixed mindset vs growth mindset. Mr Yvanovich gave an example of a school system research: Teachers were told that one group of students were really smart whereas the other groups were not as much. The smart group ended up being more successful in life which was to expect. What the teachers didn’t know was that the students in the two groups were picked at random, the teachers ended up treating the two groups differently, proving the impact the environment can have. Having a fixed mindset will get you nowhere whereas a growth mindset will develop and benefit you. The more you practice something, the better you’ll get.

It takes time for people to change – it’s not about the no, it’s about time and money. We have to create an environment to learn, develop and change in order to change and fit into an environment. Disruptive transformation is the new normal, everything nowadays changes really fast and this is changing how we work and communicate. 

How far should we push ourselves to adapt to our environment?

When we join an environment, we should research it ourselves first so we know what we are getting into. When we get there, build trust through face to face communication to build relationships. Have a mindset where you are willing to change from the beginning. Our mindset has to be growing, we need to be able to adapt. We need to be around people that challenge us, encourages us and that we can learn from. One person cannot change a negative environment but together you can – it’s all about the state of mind.

We need to try to change the overall environment if needed, but it might not be easy if you are in e.g. a junior position, here you might have to be more able to adjust or make the decision to leave because you don’t have the impact to implement this change. It is also important to listen and understand the environment, sometimes things might be working in a specific way for a reason even though it might not align with you. It’s not possible to change the environment by yourself but together you can!

All in all, it’s about changing the environment AND yourself.

  1. Show up

Always show up on time no matter the occasion.

  1. Be consistent

Keep doing what you are doing. It can be as simple as showing up for work on time every day.

  1. Good Attitude

Always keep a good attitude. If you surround yourself with positive thoughts and a good attitude, you will 1) be more happy in general and 2) people will feel good being around you, working with you and talking to you.

  1. Be committed for a long period of time

Rome wasn’t built in one day, and so your goals won’t. Stay committed, small good deeds will over time be a great benefit to you.

  1. Have faith in a burning desire – believe in yourself and what you’re doing

It is important to believe in yourself and what you’re doing, if you don’t believe in you, no one will.

  1. Willing to pay the price

Achieving your goals may require some sacrifices, but if you’re committed, it will be worthwhile.

  1. Integrity – Do what you say and say what you do

Maybe the most important of the seven steps. Make sure that people can trust you. That you do what you say you will do, that you are going to be where you promised, that you have good morals and be transparent. Having people trusting you is the key to success.
